This was my first hostel and I was very impressed! I found the staff to be incredibly kind, accommodating, and helpful with questions regarding my stay! The hostel is walkable to a lot of major sights in San Francisco, such as, Chinatown, Coit Tower, Lombard Street, Pier 39, etc. as well as public transit stations. The only issue I had with the location was the noise from the night club from across the street which made it hard to fall asleep. However, our bedroom was supplied with a window fan as well as a small personal fan in each bunk to stay cool and I assume to drown out the noise. There was decent accessibility to the bathrooms during my stay! I didn't have to wait to use the restroom once. My only suggestions is to come equipped with some $1.00 bills to rent towels which are $1.00 ea. and shower shoes. Each bathroom was fairly clean, but me personally I needed an extra layer of separation between my feet and the floor. The hostel's common area was very welcoming and offered a great feeling of community. I was not traveling alone, but my bunkmate was and she was able to easily connect with other solo travelers while staying at the hostel. Overall, whenever I find myself back in San Francisco I will be staying at the Green Tortoise Hostel :)

My recent stay at the Green Tortoise Hostel in San Francisco was truly special, not just for me, but for my mother as well. This was her very first experience staying in a hostel, and I wanted it to be positive, comfortable, and memorable. I am so grateful to say that Green Tortoise exceeded our expectations in every way, from its welcoming atmosphere to its vibrant sense of community. What truly made our stay stand out were three receptionists we had the pleasure of meeting, Seamus, Victor, and Elliot. Each of them took the time to make sure both my mother and I felt at ease, informed, and genuinely cared for. Their patience, warmth, and genuine joy for their work were evident in every interaction, and their compassion and grace made our experience feel personal rather than transactional. For my mother, who was understandably unsure about staying in a hostel, their kindness made all the difference, and by the end of our visit she was delighted with the experience. I deeply appreciate the hospitality we received, especially from Seamus, Victor, and Elliot, and when I return to San Francisco, I will without hesitation be staying at the Green Tortoise Hostel again.

The hostel was a nice stay for what it was for two nights. Hostel travelers are in the know for the most part. We were in the annex so had to walk a block and a half from the main building, most common areas, and check-in. The room was clean but they had signage aviut ants in the communal spaces of the annex which we did see but didn't put too much of a damper on things. The attached photos are some are some good ones i took of common room games and entertainment. You could stay here and meet people to explore the city with or go off on your own!

This was my first hostel experience, so I was nervous going in… but I loved it! I stayed in the female only dormitory option. There are activities for each night, a clean kitchen, large communal space, and lots of things to do. The people were very friendly and the workers were helpful. The only downside was the lack of noise cancellation for outside. There’s a popular nightclub, Monroe, across the street and I could feel it (not hear, but feel the bass) in the room. It’s an older building though, and I was tired by the end of the day anyways that I fell asleep super quick. The rooms also got relatively musty… not sure if the comforter is washed often. Bed was super comfy though, and there’s privacy for each separate bed. The separate bathrooms were nice as well!! Many options to choose from and all clean.

Awesome location and the free activities provided through the hostel are unmatched. We got to experience the live music and free ice cream sundaes at night in their ballroom and the free bus tour to Sausalito. I plan on staying here every time I come to SF now. If you have the opportunity to choose the green tortoise. One of the best hostels I have ever stayed at
